I’m sitting in a faculty meeting right now discussing administration. This is relevant to my situation.

That's every Tuesday morning for me.

If it’s only Tuesdays, we’ll call you lucky.

Yeah, it’s not. It’s also once a month after school with the entire school staff. Once a month after school with the 6-12 Career and Tech department chairs and district coordinators. Annnnd because some of us still might have two or three marbles rattling around inside our head, once a month with all the 6-12 department chairs from the whole district, just to make sure we’re all sufficiently crushed.
I only have two other teachers under me. They’re both great, but one of them is a total stud. He’s always staying late, making new curriculum, building new shop fixtures, designing new projects. I keep threatening to resign my department chair position and make him do it. His response is, “No! Then I won’t have time to do the actual work! I need you to go to the stupid meetings, so I can do the actual job!”
He’s not wrong.

An addendum: I have been observing the administration around me since becoming a faculty member. I’ve done my share of chairing and serving on various faculty committees. In fact I chair two right now and serve on three others. I become more resolved each year that a job in administration is not part of my career ambitions. It’s so much of a time suck, that I wouldn’t be able to do what I trained for in the first place.

It is insane how much of a time suck it is. It wasn’t always this bad, but new administrators have added many demands in the last couple of years. I dream of the day I can tell them to take their pitiful stipend and shove it.
